Worship is often defined as a method of glorifying God for who He is – Declaring His power, His goodness, or His unfailing Love. However, it’s important to take a moment to recognize an aspect of worship that we often miss, that is, a living sacrifice.
When was the last time you can honestly say that you sacrificed something valuable for the glory of God? It is so easy in our culture to fall into the comfortable trap of worshipping God through means which require nothing of us and leaving it at that. Not to suggest that lifting your voice to God through music, or quietly wondering at the beauty of His creation is wrong; only that those things alone don’t amount to the kind of worship which Paul is calling for in this passage.
Right now, take a moment and consider all the things that Jesus sacrificed in His life to bring glory to God. He could have chosen stability in His work as a carpenter, fame as a compelling speaker, power as King over Israel, or to remain in Heaven in perfect unity with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus chose to sacrifice all of these things for the glory of God the Father by not only living a Holy life on Earth but also by leading others to truly Worship God.
The question is, if Jesus, who was perfect in every way, had to sacrifice so much of his life to bring God glory when was the last time you, in your imperfect state, sacrificed for the Kingdom of God? Don’t simply feel convicted, but take action. If you can’t think of anything, ask yourself why that is. Take the next step and give God one more part of your life, whether that’s by beginning to tithe, or simply committing to reading this devotion for the next 40 day. Need help? Reach out to someone who has had an impact on your Walk with God and ask them how you can give more of your life as a living sacrifice.
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1 ESV)
